Abstract:
Slope failures are a common occurrence in many parts of the hill country in the periods of heavy rain. Many lives and properties have been reported lost in many such occurrences. Remedial measures taken have sometimes been effective and sometimes been ineffective. Therefore, new developments have to be tried to stabilize slopes. This project was intended to find out the applicability of 'Soil Nailing' technique in stabilizing natural slopes of Sri Lanka.
Soil Nailing is a practical and cost effective technique to stabilize slopes and embankments through the introduction of reinforcing elements into the soil mass. Nails can be driven or inserted into pre-drilled holes followed by grouting. Nails are not stressed initially, but as the soil moves, tensile forces are mobilized in these to stabilize the slope. The technique is in wide use in many countries around the world and the proven advantages of low cost, use of light construction equipment, speed of construction, design and construction flexibility and compatibility with the environment led us investigate the applicability of the technique to Sri Lankan conditions.
