Enviromental impacts of coastal zone activities in Sri lanka : a critical analysis

Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to introduce and discuss Environmental Impact Assessment methodologies currently in use, discuss their application in identifying environmental impacts of Coastal Zone activities in Sri Lanka and developing strategies to improve the existing structure and systems and mitigate adverse impacts and thus conserve and protect the resources and the environment as a whole for the betterment of our quality of life and for a better tomorrow. This study and analysis covering the coastal region is presented in nine chapters where the following key areas are considered : • Global increase in environmental pollution and the need for conservation and protection and present Sri Lanka situation in relation to Coastal Zone and Coastal Wetlands and their management. • Environmental Impact Assessment, it's need, methodologies, regulations and Management Institutions relating to Sri Lanka with specific consideration relevant to the Coastal Zone and Coastal Wetland activities. • Management of Sri Lanka Coastal Zone, Coastal Wetlands, Fishing Industry, Nearshore Land Reclamation and Disposal of Sewage/Industrial Wastes and the resultant environmental impacts and their mitigation. • Coast conservation and protection and the necessity for a Research Base for continuous research and development of scientific strategies/solutions. • Disposal of Sewage and Industrial Waste, related environmental issues and mitigatory measures.In conclusion strategies to be adopted to improve the existing structure and systems to ameliorate the adverse impacts identified in this study are presented.
