dc.description.abstract |
The paper argues that in order to achieve effective greenhouse gas mitigation targets and adoption of existing commercial buildings to climate change effects, a methodology for retrofitting is needed, largely based on bioclimatic design as it promotes low energy building operations. An initial work is presented on implementing this approach involving four types of activity;
1. Climate analysis and climate change effects
2. Trend analysis of energy and water consumption of existing buildings
3. Integrating retrofit strategies with the building embracing technical and behavioural parameters
4. Modelling efficiency and effectiveness of strategies
The use of existing tools for climate analysis, climate change predictions, strategising and testing
becomes an essential stage in the methodology. Trend analysis focuses on the synergies between behavioural and technological parameters in respect to energy and water, for which ongoing engagement with the owners and occupants in an action research approach where retrofit interventions are matched against outcomes is needed. This will lead to identify causes and effects with energy and water use over time. Outlining the process of retrofit solutions and testing efficiency of situations where solutions are applied are discussed as crucial stages. Opportunities for implementing
a successful retrofit methodology with the use of case studies are being explored in the research. |
