The Moderating effect of information technology controls on corporate governance in fraud detection and prevention ; evidence from Sri Lanka
(2023) Rajapaksha, RAS; Rathnayake, S
This study examines the moderating impact of information technology (IT) controls on corporate governance in the context of fraud detection and prevention. The primary objective is to investigate the relationship between corporate governance and fraud occurrence, with information technology controls acting as a moderating variable. The target population consists of accountants, internal auditors, and external auditors. Data was collected through a questionnaire administered to the selected participants. The findings indicate a strong positive association between corporate governance and the incidence of fraud, suggesting that inadequate governance mechanisms can contribute to fraudulent activities within organizations. However, the study also reveals that information technology controls play a significant moderating role in this relationship. The results underscore the importance of effective corporate governance practices in deterring and identifying fraudulent behavior. Furthermore, the findings highlight the crucial role of IT controls in enhancing corporate governance and strengthening fraud prevention and detection efforts. Implementing robust IT controls can help organizations mitigate the risks associated with fraud by providing a secure and reliable information environment. The implications of this research extend to practitioners, policymakers, and researchers alike. Organizations should prioritize implementing and maintaining appropriate IT controls, aligning them with established corporate governance frameworks. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the relationship between corporate governance, IT controls, and fraud prevention. Further exploration in this area is recommended to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved and to develop effective strategies to combat fraud in the digital era.

Evaluating the impact of google maps reviews on selecting tourist destinations in Sri Lanka
(2023) Samaradiwakara, NHAP; Karunarathne, B
Online reviews have a significant impact on the travelers’ decision on selecting a tourist attraction. There are many sources of online reviews to refer to when planning a journey. The reviews published in the Google Maps play an important role in this regard in the Sri Lankan context. The review rating given for the same tourist attraction can be contradictory in two different review platforms. Therefore, the question of whether travelers believe in the reliability of online reviews needs to be researched. Also, the performance of different types of tourist attractions can be identified by analyzing the review data in Google Maps. There has been only a few research done in Sri Lanka with Google Maps data. We address these issues through a quantitative analysis of data gathered through questionnaire responses. We analyzed and found seven factors that relate with the intention to select a tourist attraction. They are Access Frequency, Willingness to recommend, Attitude towards visiting, Perceived Reliability, Trust on Map Information, Destination perception and Desire to visit. Further we
analyzed the data related to tourist attractions scraped out from Google Maps to find out the best performing tourist attraction categories in the Sri Lankan tourism industry.

Evaluating the Feasibility of Reducing Cooling Loads of Tropical Building Using Phase Change Material-Based Curtain
(Department of Textile and Apparel Engineering University of Moratuwa, Sri, 2024) Kaushalya, W.T.; Jinanjali, M.D.D.S.; Nandasiri, G.K.; Nissanka, I.D.; Nandasiri, G.K.; Jayawardena, T.S.S.; Madhurangi, C.; Abeysundara, S.; Maheshi, I.
Buildings in tropical climates have significant cooling
demand due to high ambient temperatures and intense solar
radiation, resulting in reliance on air conditioning and high
electricity consumption, especially during peak daytime
hours. This study explores the feasibility of reducing cooling
loads in tropical buildings through the integration of phase
change material (PCM)-incorporated screens. PCMs are
capable of storing and releasing thermal energy during phase
transitions, making them suitable for indoor temperature
regulation. By integrating PCM into curtain systems, the
material can reduce indoor heat, especially during peak hours
(1100 hours to 1500 hours), when cooling demand is highest.
This paper evaluates the effectiveness of this approach and
investigates key factors such as PCM selection, climatic
conditions and building system compatibility. The study aims
to demonstrate how PCM-incorporated curtains can
contribute to increasing the energy efficiency of tropical
buildings.

Effectiveness of multi factor authentications to ensure information security on customer data study on the insurance industry in Sri Lanka
(2023) Samarasekara, D; Karunarathne, PDJB
Organizations face new challenges in securing their networks and systems due to the growing threat of cybersecurity attacks and the shift towards remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditional username and password authentication methods are no longer sufficient to protect against increasingly sophisticated attacks. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an added layer of security by combining two or more authentication factors to enforce access policies. MFA is a security feature that requires submitting two or more than two items of information to confirm that they are the actual user. This can include items such as passwords, One Time Password (OTP)s sent to their registered mobile phones or emails, or biometrics such as face recognition or fingerprint scan. These hardened methods are more difficult to interpret by attackers since the actual user biometrics are involved, therefore they do not have much support even if they steal an OTP or a password. For instance, a typical user might be required to enter their username and password, as well as a code sent to their phone. As a result, even if an attacker has the user's login and password, accessing their account will be far more challenging. MFA can employ a wide variety of various sorts of elements. The following are some examples of common factors: something you know, like a login and password; something you have, like a security token or a smartphone; and something you are, like a fingerprint or face recognition. There are many challenges and opportunities associated with implementing MFA in various contexts. Some of the challenges include cost, complexity, and user acceptance. However, there are also many opportunities associated with implementing MFA. Some of the opportunities include increased security, reduced risk, and improved compliance. Overall, MFA is a valuable tool that can help organizations to improve their security posture. With all above in hand, it is more important to consider the challenges over opportunities while implementing MFA solutions before finalizing the decision.

The Effect of transformational leadership on employee job satisfaction in small and medium IT enterprises
(2023) Perera, PAHE; Wijayasiri, MPAP
A transformational leadership style is currently identified as a critical component affecting the performance of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), impacting their trajectory towards development, innovation, and long-term success. The current study was carried out by the researcher with the overall purpose of recognizing the effects of transformational leadership on employee job satisfaction in small and medium-sized information technology enterprises in the Sri Lankan context. The concept of transformational leadership was characterised into four components which perform as the independent variables of the study including inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation while employee job satisfaction used as the dependant variables. The study population for the investigation chosen as the employees who are working in SMEs in IT sector in Sri Lanka. As the sample of the study, the study selected 400 employees of SME firms of IT industry from the population. All the respondents were chosen from IT SMEs which employed workers between 11 to 200 based on the SME categorization introduced in National Policy Framework for Small Medium Enterprise Development utilizing convenient sampling technique and distributing a structured questionnaire. The data analysis for the study was carried out using SPSS software 25.0 version. Descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to address the core requirements of the study. According to the findings of the correlation analysis discussed, the independent variable of the study including inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation were positively associated with the employee job satisfaction in small and medium-sized IT enterprises in the Sri Lanka. Finally, based on the findings of multiple regression analysis, all the independent variables including inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation considered in the regression model has demonstrated a significant positive influence on the determination of employee job satisfaction within the considered a study context.
